Swimming Instructors conduct Learn-to-Swim lessons at the Wrangell Swimming Pool and Recreation Facility under the direction of the Program Coordinators- Kate Thomas, Jamie Roberts and Lucy Robinson.

Swimming Instructors must be 15 years of age, possess a current CPR, first aid certification and be able to perform the swimming skills for the level they wish to teach. Swimming Instructor certification is valid for 2 years. CPR and First Aid training is an optional "add on" to the instructor course. 

New swimming instructor candidates are trained by Program Coordinators, and those who are already certified swimming instructors with other national programs can easily become swimming instructors for JES.


Instructor Requirements and Responsibilities
  • 15 years old or older
  • Possess a CPR/AED/1st Aid certificate
  • Demonstrate strokes for the skill level you are going to teach
  • Mature and professional
  • Safety conscious
  • Interact well with students and parents

Things you need to know
  • The fee is waiver for eligible candidates.
  • Eligible candidates are those that are hired by the department and are able to commit to a full season of lessons.
  • The course begins on Tuesday, May 28 @ 8:00AM
  • Participants should arrive to the pool a few minutes early.
  • The course includes theoretical and practical components.
  • Participants should be prepared to instruct their peers on various skills.
  • Participants must read the instructors manual before attending the first day of class.
  • The electronic version is available on the program page titled Swim Instructors Certification.
  • Paper copies of the manual are available for loan through the pool office.
  • Please bring your swim suit, towel, water bottle and paper/pen.
  • CPR and First Aid training is an optional "add on" to the instructor course at no added cost.
  • The learn to swim program offered by Wrangell Parks and Recreation begins on June 3.
  • Swim instructors are expected to work a minimum of two full learn to swim sessions.
  • Each session has 8 classes. Each class is between 30-45 minutes in length.
  • PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO SWIM LESSONS OR SWIM CAMP DURING THE WEEK OF JULY 1-5, 2019.
